The 'average' size of a double garage is normally in the region of 5.2m long, 5.2m wide and 2.4m high.

Should you have a garage like this then after the walls, floor and ceiling are insulated you may have an excellent sized room with a footprint of 5m (16’ 4”) x 5m (16’ 4”).

So the 'average' garage may in face allow a whopping 25m2 and may well be one of the larger rooms in your property!

A rough brief guide about insulation

A few notes below on how much 'room size' you will lose to allow for insulation:

• Single skin un-insulated exterior walls – you will lose about 100mm (4 inches)
• Interior walls – you will lose approx. 15mm for plasterboard and skim
• Floor – normally the minimum requirements of 100mm of insulation are needed

To convert a double garage does not mean double the price!

A double garage allows for more options and depending on size may allow for a ‘self contained’ studio. Normally a double garage will allow for ensuite facilities along with a kitchenette.
